Red Maple Dog Care and Training has been in operation for over 35 years.

In 2018, ownership transferred to wife and husband team, Jen and James Reynolds, who moved to Spencer from the San Francisco Bay area, and after running a successful cage-free doggy day care and boarding business for 3.5 years.  They have expanded the business to 12 indoor/outdoor kennels, five of which are larger in size to accommodate very large dogs or 2-3 medium sized dogs.  The couple also added a 100 ft x 40 ft attached play yard with a combination of artificial turf, natural grass, and natural playground fiber so the dogs can enjoy play time.

Jen and James bring over 25 years of professional expertise working with dogs and a true love for dogs.  Having both worked in animal welfare for their careers, they are huge advocates for spay/neuter and adoption/rescue and give a first visit discount to those clients who have adopted from a rescue organization or shelter.  In fact, Jen was most recently the Executive Director of Stray Haven Humane Society & SPCA in Waverly, New York until June 2021.

At Red Maple the owners feel it's essential to not only provide a safe and comfortable environment for the dogs, but also physical and mental stimulation during their stay with us.  That's why every dog gets out at least 5 times a day for play time in our play yard.  For dogs that are social with others, Jen and James are experts at creating play groups so that the dogs can not only enjoy playing, but also get to practice good dog skills.

Jen and James know it can be hard to leave your loved one, so you will receive daily texts or emails with updates on your dog(s), including pictures and some videos.  In addition to boarding services, Jen offers private training sessions and group classes in the summer season.

ABOUT JEN

As a behaviorist and dog trainer and all-around dog expert, Jen was born to work with dogs! Originally from Rochester, NY, she went to Cornell University pre-vet and graduated in 1998 with a degree in Animal Science. She then completed a Master’s of Science degree in Wildlife Biology at SUNY-ESF studying white-tailed deer in 2001. But Jen's calling to work with domestic animals took her back to animal welfare and wanting to work in an animal shelter. She spent the next 13 years working as a Shelter Manager and Director of Animal Control in California, as well as the Senior Manager for Best Friends  Animal Society's LA team.  She received her M.B.A in 2011, then in 2014 became the Vice President of Training Programs for Cesar Milan, the “Dog Whisperer,” running his Dog Psychology Center until Jen found her true calling as the co-owner (with James) and operator of a cage-free doggy day care and boarding business outside San Francisco, California.  After 3.5 years, Jen made the choice to come "back home" and share her expertise with the dogs and people of central and southern New York with her husband James, 3 rescued dogs and 1 cat.  In addition to owning and operating Red Maple, Jen was the Executive Director of Stray Haven Humane Society & SPCA in Waverly, NY from 2019-2021.

ABOUT JAMES

James is from Southern California and after an early career as a mechanic, he found his calling as a Senior Animal Services Officer for 13 years in Los Angeles County, which is how Jen and he met. James was the lead investigator on all cruelty and humane cases, held multiple humane training certifications, and is also a snake and reptile specialist. In 2015 Jen and James moved to Northern California to run a successful cage-free dog boarding business out of their home, for 3.5 years.  In late 2018 James and Jen were both feeling the urge to leave the hustle and bustle of California life, and to be closer to Jen's family in the Southern Tier and made the move to Spencer to run Red Maple.  James has 2 adult daughters in California and a son in Washington, along with 3 grandchildren.
